Storing Your Breast Milk
Caution:
- Do not freeze breast milk repeatedly.
- Do not mix fresh breast milk with frozen breast milk.
- Always discard any remaining breast milk after feeding.
Note:
Only store breast milk collected using a sterilized breast pump.
Proper Storage Guidelines:
- Expressed milk should be placed in a clean and sterilized storage bag or a bottle with a secure seal.
- Immediately refrigerate or freeze the milk.
Caution:
- Refrigerated expressed milk can be stored for up to 48 hours.
- Frozen milk can be stored for up to three months.
- Always label the bottle or storage bag with the date and time of expression.
- Consume the earliest expressed milk first.
Thawing Breast Milk:
- Place frozen breast milk in the refrigerator overnight to defrost it safely.
- In emergencies, breast milk can be thawed in a bowl of warm water.
- Once thawed, breast milk should be consumed within 24 hours.
Heating Breast Milk:
- To warm breast milk, place the bottle upright in a bowl of warm water or use a bottle warmer for safe and quick heating.
Warning:
- Always check the temperature of breast milk before feeding your baby.
- Do not microwave breast milk, as this can destroy important nutrients and antibodies.
- Uneven heating in a microwave may cause localized overheating, leading to burns.
- Do not immerse the milk storage bottle in boiling water, as this may cause it to crack or break.
